Where do you want to install WordPress?
Local install means WordPress runs only on your computer. Nobody else can see it. You use it to practice and learn, free of cost, with no risk of breaking a real site.
Live web host means WordPress runs on a server you rent from a company. Your site goes on the internet. Anyone can visit it. This costs money and carries more risk while you learn.
For your first install, use a local setup. You learn the same skills without any pressure or cost. Once you feel confident, you move to a live host.
Here is your first lesson.
Step 1: Install a local server tool
This tool creates a mini web server on your computer. WordPress needs a server to run.
- Go to the Local website (localwp.com)
- Download the free app for your operating system
- Install it like any normal program
Step 2: Create a new local site
- Open Local
- Click the plus button to add a new site
- Name your site anything you want
- Choose the default settings when asked
- Set a username and password you will remember
Step 3: Wait for Local to build your site
Local installs WordPress automatically inside this process. This takes a minute or two.
Step 4: Open your site
- Click “Open Site” inside Local
- Your WordPress site loads in your browser
- Click “WP Admin” to log into the dashboard
Step 5: Confirm the install worked
- Log in with the username and password you set
- You land on the WordPress dashboard
- This confirms your install works
Try Step 1 now, Viewer. Tell me when Local is installed on your computer, and I’ll walk you through Step 2 in detail.
