Someone trashed an assault rifle and a possible grenade launcher in Seville. Now the police are looking for the owner

Can you imagine walking the dog and throwing a rocket launcher out of someone’s car window, driving the wrong way and getting lost in traffic? This isn’t a scene from Grand Theft Auto VI, it’s something that happened in Seville. A black garbage bag, in the middle of a street in a residential neighborhood in Seville, and sticking out of it are things not normally seen in waste: an assault rifle and a tube that could be a grenade launcher. That’s what a neighbor of Tiro de Linea found out last Wednesday, October 14. His photo later circulated online and fueled rumors of a shooting, which police denied. The investigation remains open.

What happened? According to Diario de Sevilla, the person who got rid of the weapon threw it from a moving car that was passing in a prohibited direction and that came to the area from Celestino Mutis Park. It was about 7:00 pm, according to that version, although El Debate places the police raid on the area and the discovery of Avenida de los Titinos at about eight o’clock. It is not known at this time whether the occupants of the vehicle have been identified or detained.

Ukraine is just one from Russia

What is known about the weapon? According to The Objective, Scientific Police and Tedux, experts in explosive disposal, are analyzing the material, particularly the tubular device, which may match the grenade launcher. Investigators want to clarify its origin and whether it could have been used earlier in a crime.

The AK-47, however, is so called because it is an assault rifle designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov and adopted by the Soviet Army in 1949. It is gas operated, fed in selective mode (semi-automatic or burst) with a 7.62x39mm cartridge and usually round magazine. Unloaded, it weighs about 4.3 kg, measures about 87 cm, has a theoretical rate of about 600 shots per minute and an effective range of about 350 meters. Grenade launchers mounted under the barrel of these rifles, such as the Russian GP-25, are 40 mm caliber, muzzle-loaded, and have a maximum range of 400-450 meters.

Another scam. The picture went viral then Vox published it on X Mentions that weapons appeared after an intense early morning shootout between a gang and the police. However, the National Police has denied any armed clashes in the city in recent days. What was there were two different operations in the southern district.

In one, agents followed a vehicle coming from Dos Hermanas. And in another, they were chasing a van with hooded passengers who were, presumably, preparing an attack. Neighbors described four police officers with bulletproof vests and rifles on Almirante Topet Street and two vans at the entrance to the neighborhood. And disarmament may be related.

Drug trafficking route. First investigations suggest that the discovery is linked to an anti-narcotics operation conducted by the Dos Hermanas police station, which has already led to searches and arrests, some in Montequinto. Another incident happened in the neighborhood that night. Early Wednesday into Thursday morning, a stolen van chase on Osuna Street ended with two prisoners and an injured police officer, after the occupants rammed a patrol car. The driver later went to jail. Despite the proximity in time and place, it has not been proven that it had anything to do with the rifle.

This is not the first time. Battle rifles are nothing new in Andalusian organized crime: according to The Objective, the prosecutor’s office warned of the increasing militarization of some groups in its memoirs. Without leaving Seville, in April 2025 the national police found a Kalashnikov with ammunition in a house converted into a bunker in Las Tres Milles Propidades during an operation against five cannabis laboratories. The strange thing about the Tiro de Línea case is that it appears to be lying in the middle of the road. What we are looking for right now is to determine the owner of the weapon to continue the investigation.
