Train drivers’ strike cripples Renfe in Madrid: line closures and minimal services in doubt

A day after the Urda (Toledo) accident that killed 69 people, train drivers continue their strike. Demanding greater security measures, they consider that there is more reason than ever to carry out this strike. Some strikes, particularly in Madrid, caused some lines to collapse.

strike. On October 16, the Spanish Union of Railway Machinists (SEMAF) called a 24-hour strike, confirming that “after registering the conflict commission on October 5, the decision we came to today’s meeting is clear: everything remains as paralyzed as in May.”

Among the demands that have been put on the table, CEMAF has emphasized the necessity “Working with reliable and safe trains: We want practical and reliable technical solutions to the safety and reliability problems we face in rolling stock.”

Therefore, they considered that after the failure of the LZB system and the subsequent management from the Atocha Control Center (known as CRC) in the well-known serious accident with dozens of deaths in Urda (Toledo), there was more reason than ever to stop.

The LZB system that failed in the Toledo accident was supposed to be completely replaced by ERTMS-2 in 2026.

strike. Although the strike has called for widespread stoppages on high-speed, long- and medium-distance and Cercanias services, minimal services require great support.

Renfe notes that they are as follows:

  • At Cercanías, minimum services are established by time slot, 75% during peak hours and 50% during the rest of the day.
  • Normal service is established at an average of 65% of the media distance
  • On average 73% normal service is established at high speed/long distance
  • In case of merchandise, the percentage is 26% of the prescribed service.

What happened? The strike continued but the situation was not uniform everywhere. newspaper Indicate that the impact in Catalonia has been less than expected as minimum services have been met, but there are 25% fewer vehicles on trains in Rodalis. The other side of the coin has been endless traffic jams at the entrance to Barcelona this morning.

In Madrid, however, the situation is completely different. Cercanias reported that lines C-1, C-3, C4b, C-8a and C-8b have been suspended. And the rest of that line has very important conditions. This implies that there are minimum services which are not being met as trains do not run on the aforementioned lines.

pose. When Renfe announced the minimum services to be used today, they accused CEMAF of calling “an unjustified strike demanding issues beyond the scope of Renfe’s powers”, confirming that “all the obligations assumed have been fully met, as reported in the various follow-up meetings of the agreement held in April, May and October.”

On the contrary, from Semaf they reply that it has already come up with no question Xataka They consider that the follow-up to the strike has been successful but rejects the fact that minimum services have not been met. “We don’t have any evidence, it could be that a colleague is taking more precautions if they think it’s necessary,” they told us when we asked about this.
