About Matthias Prats, his father and his wealth: “My father lived to work and I lived to live; I invested in a photovoltaic company with some friends”

Matthias Prats is one of the oldest news anchors on television, but he is also the veteran anchor of Antena 3’s news program, talking both about his investment in solar energy and the differences between his way of working and his father’s.

A solar garden with friends. As he explained in 2018, Prats entered the renewable business at the invitation of some friends, and at that time, the investment did not reward him: “It generates electricity, but it does not generate more. We made an investment many years ago with some friends, who invited us to participate. I liked it because I didn’t like it that I didn’t want to invest yet, but I couldn’t invest yet.”

And behind that phrase there is a company with its own name, Photovoltaica Tarazona Tres SL, which was founded in May 2008 and is dedicated to the production of electrical energy with renewable energy. Of course, this company had already been sold to the Q-Energy Fund, at the same time Pratts ceased to be the administrator and sole partner.

And why did he leave the community? Well, at least he didn’t explain it publicly, but in 2018 he admitted that the investment “still does not give a return”, although the accounts, although Fotovoltaica Tarazona Trece closed 2020 with a positive result of only 8,000 euros.

The father did not want him on TV. Pratts has spoken on multiple occasions about his father and the difference in working methods: “He lived more to work and I lived more to live. I have a responsibility to fulfill my mission, but it’s something else.”

It was difficult for the announcer Matías Prats Cañete to accept that his son would follow in his footsteps, and the presenter himself said in 2017 that his father was professionally inflexible and that he even recommended not to hire him when he joined TVE as an intern, although he eventually trusted him and, in his words, “he was always my trusted teacher.”

From radio to stadium studios. Born in Madrid in 1950, Prats studied journalism and law at CEU San Pablo University and started at Madrid’s radio station La Voz as a contributor to ‘Spanish Sports Sunday’. He joined TVE as an intern in April 1975 and ended up presenting news programs at the public channel ‘Estudio Estadio’ (from 1981 to 1993 and again in 1995 and 1997) and various slots from 1991 to 1996.

And his sporting side led him to attend eight Olympic Games, six World Cups, tennis tournaments such as Roland Garros or Wimbledon and golf events such as the Augusta Masters or the Ryder Cup.

More than a quarter of a century at Antenna 3. Pratts signed on for Antenna 3 on September 14, 1998, sharing direction of the news program with Susanna Grisso and Olga Vija before moving to the second edition in 2003 and taking over the weekend news program in 2014. At that point he encountered the live experience that, according to himself, had the greatest impact on him: he was in charge of Antenna 3 Noticias on September 11, 2001, connecting with Ricardo Ortega from New York.

And if anything made him popular among the younger generation, it was his jokes and word games, which made him a trending topic and the hero of memes more than once.

Advertising and Partnerships. Advertisements were added to his work as a presenter, and if “Allow me to force” sounds familiar to you, it’s no coincidence: Pratts has been the face of Linia Directa since 2012, with such ads, and he said goodbye to the relationship with a campaign in which his weekend news partner, Monica Carrillo, was among the possible winners.

In addition to Photovoltaics, the journalist had another company, MP Babas SL, founded in 1993 and dedicated to the representation of media professionals and the production of television and radio programs.

More than five decades after joining TVE as an intern, Prats remains one of the most recognizable faces of Spanish television.
