Carrying your ID on your cell phone can be very convenient, but having an official app doesn’t mean we can use it in every situation. The election so far was a good example of that. Although MiDNI allows us to prove our identity from the phone, its use in polls was suspended due to doubts about verifying the authenticity of digital documents. The issue was not minor: the November 29 election was just weeks away and it was still pending to resolve how to use this option without compromising voter identification guarantees.
This Thursday, November 5, the Central Election Board (JEC) lifted the moratorium and will allow the use of MiDNI to identify oneself at polling booths in the next general elections. The change comes after the interior ministry confirmed that they will all have a device with a camera and browser, through an official verifier, to verify the temporary QR code generated by the app. The authorization, however, does not extend to MiDGT, the application of the General Directorate of Traffic, which is excluded as a means of selective identification.
