A town of 300 residents wakes up with a coffin of Pedro Sánchez on the balcony of its town hall. Now there are two complaints

Hoyocasero is a town in the Alto Alberche Valley of Ávila, with 294 inhabitants and an altitude of more than 1,300 meters above sea level. It does not usually appear in national newspapers; However, this week it made headlines for a cardboard structure in the shape of a coffin, a date of death and a picture of Pedro Sanchez. On the balcony of the town’s town hall, next to the official flag and as described by Avilarade, he carried an RIP and a red cross. Less than a month before the 29-N general elections, the issue has entered the pre-campaign stage.

what happened The version available is that of the mayor, Iván Picós (PP). According to their statement, one or more unidentified persons placed the coffin in the early hours of Saturday to Sunday on the occasion of Halloween. He was out of town. On Sunday morning, one councilor saw it and told another. Three agreed to move it. Picós maintains that Halloween does not support using the balcony of an institutional building.

First complaint. It’s selective, not criminal, it said Monday. Frente Amplio, the new progressive coalition that is making its debut in this general election, went to the Ávila Zone Electoral Board against the city council. He contends that a public building cannot display such a message. It cited Article 103.1 of the Constitution, Articles 8.1 and 50.2 of LOREG and the Central Election Board’s 2017 agreement on party symbols on public buildings. It also warns of a potential hate crime, which only a judge can determine. The complaint has requested immediate removal of the coffin. By then he had already retired, according to the mayor.

Feedback. The PSOE’s provincial secretary of Ávila, Carlos Montesino, condemned what happened and demanded an explanation from a PP city council. For him, “what is not acceptable is representing the death of the president of the government.” At the national level, PSOE has framed the case for what it calls a “violent influx” of PP. It refers to a complaint by a Cantabrian government representative against a popular councilor for an alleged attack at a cattle fair. The issue of the coffin, however, has also been condemned by the PP mayor.

Second complaint. Picos himself in front of the Civil Guard. He assured that neither the mayor’s office nor the city council “promoted, approved, consented to this” and asked to identify the authors. He also asked that the episode not tarnish the image of a city whose neighbors, he said, were ignorant of the events. It is not known whether the author is out of the council today. If not, the mayor’s story is lost. There is no statement from the resolution from the Civil Guard or the Electoral Board, and the event itself depends on the testimony of the mayor.

Is it anyone’s fault? A coffin with a politician’s face is not an opinion about his management. It represents his death. More than a month ago, at Soul Camp, the campers themselves removed a coffin with the face of Isabel Díaz Ayuso with an argument that is valid for anyone: you cannot assume a peaceful protest and consent for those images. Ayuso has already complained about this.

Earlier, in front of Ferraz, a Sanchez doll was hung from a traffic light and brutally beaten like a piñata. PP and PSOE concurred in his condemnation. Converting the symbolic death of an adversary into a political gesture does not take on a more extreme or metaphorical reading than pure and simple threats.
