Apple responds to broken iPhone Duo screens and interestingly, it’s not users’ fault

Apple’s long-awaited foldable, the iPhone Duo, finally hit stores last Friday. You can read our analysis now, but the good thing about this mobile is that it’s in people’s hands and it’s easy to find all kinds of opinions. However, if anything is making noise, it’s the broken screen issue that has already started spreading the idea that the iPhone Duo is broken.

Reddit has some experience with this, with some users even commenting that they broke during the setup process. Wow when you open it. Perhaps the most popular image is the one by user scary_duck23, which crowns these lines and which you’ve probably seen.

And the usual thing in this situation is that Apple doesn’t respond or, if it does, it tells us that we’re using it wrong. but no

Apple has admitted that there is something wrong with the iPhone Duo

What is curious about the images with the damaged internal screen is that the same lines of dead pixels appear: one below the central part, where the hinge is, and a vertical line that crosses the right part of the panel.

It is surprising that the error is exactly the same and this leads us to think that there is a design flaw. We’ll get to that later, but for now, whatever Apple recognized As for 9to5Mac:

“We are aware of an issue affecting the internal display of a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users are experiencing issues with the display on their iPhone Duo, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”

Only time will tell if this is truly “a small number of units,” since not many were actually sold, and the good thing is that AppleCare+ doesn’t require iPhone Duo replacement for this problem.

The new iPad mini 2026 doesn't just debut an OLED panel: it's also fitted with an A20 Pro to play in the senior league.

It’s a curious message from a company that turned into a meme of “you’re doing it wrong” with the iPhone 4 and its coverage issues, or Apple’s first true foldable, the iPhone 6, which was too easy to damage and which is of course your fault. It happened to Ghataka’s director, no less.

But anyway, let’s get back to how strange it is that the iPhone Duo has several of the exact same errors. Apart from analyzes like ours, there are other useful things like JerryRigEverything, which is fun for the most ‘techie’ users apart from exploding the gadget, and it’s from iFixit.

This medium specializes in showing the degree of repairability of devices, suggesting design improvements, giving guidance to users and professionals themselves, and trying to explain where design flaws come from in what they get their hands on. And the problem is that, as they explain at minute 14 of the video that we put below, A design flaw may be to blame.

The hinge has a point where there is a structural reinforcement when we place the screen and this is the one that creates a when the panel is folded. A lot of stress on the panel and its connectionsWhich can cause this error.

In terms of repairability, they give it a 5, which was expected being a foldable, but what’s most interesting is how much of an issue that potentially affects more units or is something located in a production batch that, whatever, went wrong.

There’s no reason to think this is a huge episode, but these things happen in technology. And if not, say that to Samsung with the Galaxy Note 7, Microsoft with the first Xbox 360… or Apple with the disastrous butterfly keyboard that ate a server.

In Xataka | Everyone talks about the iPhone Duo unlocking animation, but I think Android should copy something else: Continuity.
