There’s a reason the fights in ‘Phantom Blade: Zero’ are like martial arts movies: Jackie Chan

When we first saw ‘Phantom Blade: Zero’ at the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023, many thought that these fast and spectacular fights looked like sequences from an action movie. This was not a coincidence. The project of the Chinese studio S-Game has been developing for years with a very specific idea: to transfer the precision, acrobatics and strength of martial arts movies to video games, and what better reference than Jackie Chan. The result has convinced critics and is about to hit the market: it will premiere on October 29 for PC and PlayStation 5.

Jackie Chan stamp. As our colleagues at 3DJuegos detailed after a trip to China, there’s no simple animation technique behind the game’s combat, plus the Flying Goat motion capture studio in Shanghai, which has acrobat experience and certification from Jackie Chan.

In 1976, Jackie Chan formed his own team of stuntmen, the Jackie Chan Stunt Team, with whom he created some of the most recognizable choreography of his career. The actor has made acrobatics and fighting one of his hallmarks, a tradition that has continued and is present in the new S-Game game.

Cable and sensor mm. Filming on set combines the physical skills of the acrobats with the necessary techniques to capture both body movements and combat weapons. To reproduce the most spectacular aerial acrobatics, they have a system of cables, pulleys and counterweights installed on the roof. The technology captures all movement and allows this physical interpretation to be transferred to digital characters, achieving a much more natural effect than traditional animation alone.

China plays in the first division. Although S-GAME showed the project in 2023, it has actually been running since 2018. One of the reasons it took so long was the ambition to fight the real experts. Added to this are the settings, enemy and boss designs, with a triple A-like production level.

‘Black Myth: Wukong’ has already demonstrated the international potential of a blockbuster developed in China, and now S-GAME wants to carve a niche for itself with its own offering, a hallmark backed by great technological ambitions and Chinese martial arts.

The reviews are through the roof. They say on Vidaextra that the first reviews of ‘Phantom Blade: Zero’ are excellent. The game has already achieved 88 out of 100 on Metacritic and aims to become a bestseller It will be available on October 29 for PC and PlayStation.
