It can take around 10 or 15 minutes to traverse the ‘GTA 5’ map from end to end with the highway. In an interview with Edge, the game’s directors gave more details about the size of the map and everything indicates that it will take us longer to get through the new ‘Leonida’ realm.
Rockstar’s official confirmation. We’ve been hearing leaks for years suggesting that the ‘GTA VI’ map will be massive, but now we have concrete and official details. Directors Aaron Garbutt and Rob Nelson spoke to AJ about the scale of the new region compared to the studio’s other games.
As explained, the Leonida map will have almost double the surface area of ’GTA V’. Rockstar hasn’t released a specific figure in square kilometers, but the community is already responsible for estimating the size and some have even calculated what it would take to cross the map by car: 29 minutes. We’re talking about doubling or even tripling when crossing Los Santos.
Twice as big as ‘GTA V’. Leonida is the fictional state (inspired by Florida) where the game takes place. The main urban center is Vice City, inspired by Miami, and will be surrounded by large expanses of rural and coastal areas, such as the Leonida Keys (Florida Keys) or the Grassrivers (Everglades). According to head of development Rob Nelson, “the map is twice the size of ‘GTA 5′” and will triple the playable area of ’Red Dead Redemption 2’. To put this into context, the ‘GTA V’ map is usually around 76 km², although this last figure comes from community measurements, not Rockstar.
the vice the city Also increases In this installment the big city will be twice the size of Los Santos. The comparison is even more striking when we include its surrounding areas: “Vice City, including its suburbs, is eleven times larger than Los Santos and its neighbors,” Nelson says. This is an important distinction as the new game doesn’t limit itself to expanding its main city, but rather opts for a more expansive setting around it.
An environment is thought out in detail. Having a huge map is nice, but it’s of little use if there’s nothing to do. Rockstar has set his sights on saving rural areas from being depopulated, a problem that plagued the North of GTA 5. Regarding that effort, Aaron Garbutt noted in The Edge: “You can go anywhere, any random place, and a large number of people will already be thinking about that place.”
Another area where Rockstar wants to make a leap is the exploration of buildings. In ‘GTA V’ there were many facilities and buildings that we couldn’t enter, but in ‘GTA VI’ the studio wants to make the world much more accessible from the inside. We’ll be able to access more and more interiors, from shops and commercial premises to other buildings spread across the map, without each entry involving a loading screen.
There’s also something else that’s going to be huge.. The map size aims to be impressive, but there’s another detail that can take a lot of time: downloading the game. According to a leak collected by GamesRadar, the game for PS5 will weigh in at 210GB, almost double the weight of ‘GTA V’ (it seems Rockstar has set a goal of doubling the previous installment in everything). It’s not a confirmed figure and the total size will depend on the platform, but it doesn’t seem like a matter of downloading and playing right away.
