In May 1974, still only in the imagination of George Lucas, Darth Vader did not wear a helmet. Governor Hoydak let out a high-pitched laugh in the nuclear-white chamber and patted the back of this primordial Darth Vader, a tall, grave-faced general who barely cracked a smile. He was just an Imperial general and the scene is in the draft of ‘The Star Wars’ that Lucas finished that month. His name is mentioned there for the first time.
What is Darth? But the name has a history. Phil Szostak of Lucasfilm Rebuild the process Name making says that Lucas wrote “General Vader/Imperial Commander” on the list of potential characters, still without Darth. Lucas himself said that the villain started out as Dark Water and the combination with Vader came later, after trying other monikers. There’s also another sign: At Downey High School, a grade above Lucas, a certain Gary Vader played football, which appears in the 1960 yearbook.
It’s official. The most elaborate explanation was given by Lucas in 2005: Darth would be a variant the darkness and Vader, the father. “Dark Father.” In August 2010 he repeated the concept to an audience of fans, already with a nod to Dutch, in which language Vader I mean father. However, this contradicts other versions, in which Darth Vader was not Luke’s father in the first draft of the script, such as that provided by Leigh Brackett in 1978 for The Empire Strikes Back, in which Luke and Vader were not father and son. Kinship entered the second version that Lucas wrote, on April 1, 1978, according to Szostak, who added that “Darth” means nothing in Dutch or German.

Vader, Darth Vader. In the 1977 film, Obi-Wan addresses his former student simply as “Darth”, as if it were his first name during the conflict on the Death Star. On screen, the word didn’t become a shared title until 1999, when the illustrated script for ‘The Phantom Menace’ featured Darth Sidious and Darth Maul looking over the city. And from there they tried to root the name. For example, Ryder Windham in 2007 proposed two origins in the Rakata language: Daritha“Emperor”, or Sum Darr (victory or victory) and So (death), although he admits that the true origin is unknown. In April 2014, Lucasfilm removed all of that material from the canon.
What’s left of Darth Vader? Disney brought Vader back to television in ‘Rogue One’ and ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ and opted for a more literal reading. An official guide published in 2017 translates Darth as “Dark Lord”. Canon has retained the adjective since 2005’s “Dark Father.” And it is thought that the title will be lost. ‘Star Wars: Maul – Lord of Shadows’, released on Disney+ in April 2026, dispenses with Darth in its title and presents its protagonist as an ancient Sith lord.
Many versions and many possibilities for one science Which tends to rewrite itself according to narrative and commercial demands, as fans of ‘Star Wars’ know well. It is clear that there is nothing more circular than “Dark Father” as a meaning, but it is impossible. Although… why let reality spoil a good original story?
