It was almost granted and now it is finally confirmed: Madrid Metro already has a final design for the extension of Line 1. It will do this with an investment of 400 million euros, the creation of the first double header in history in the suburbs and the change of some stations.
What has been approved? Madrid already has a new metro line for the Madrid Nuevo Norte, which was also known as Operation Chamartin before choosing a comprehensive renovation and final project in the northern part of the capital. The project will create a new park and 10,500 homes; The extension of Metro Line 1 will serve these functions.
Finally, and with five projects on the table, what is proposed is to extend the current metro line 1 with a branch that will start at Chamartin station. This was the only option that proposed this solution, the remaining four chose to build a new line connected to Chamartin station.

What’s new? For the first time, the Madrid Metro will have a line with two headings. The extension of the current Line 1 will have three stations, Business Center, Fuencaral Sur and Fuencaral Norte. The latter will be one of the two starts of the line, along with Pinar de Chamartin (which connects to line 4).
Therefore, northbound travelers on Line 1 need to check whether their train goes to Pinar de Chamartin or Fuencaral Norte, as happens in other European cities where two trains to different destinations pass through the same platform.
What has been ruled out is the proposed exploitation of Line 4 over Line 1 at Bambu and Pinar de Chamartin stations. The first project proposed changing the head of Line 4 to Chammartin. This eliminated the double header but would force residents traveling south to transfer just two stops after taking the train, causing some rejection.

How much and when? The new extension project of Metro Line 1 will cost around 400 million euros. Among the alternative options, the chosen project is the most expensive despite the construction of a new line Economist.
Of the other four options, two of them chose to dig near the surface and the other two favored digging deep to go under the M-30. All of them had budgets between 250 and 265 million euros.
Regarding the execution of the work, construction plans must be drawn up and approved at this time. It is expected that this process will proceed between 2027 and 2028 and the works will extend between 2030 and 2032.

A deep reform. The extension of Line 1 of the Madrid Metro is part of a historic expansion. In addition to this division, the city is immersed in the extension of Line 11, known as La Gran Diagonal. This branch will turn from one of the shortest to the longest branch in the city, serving the eastern side of the capital.
In addition, there is also an extension of Line 10 to the south of Madrid to offer a quick exit to the capital to municipalities such as Leganes or Mostols that currently have to go to Alcorcón to connect with this exit in the north of the city.
